and some of them did it because the whole timeline in their instances had suddenly become simply Gab timeline because the size of their userbase is so disproportionately larger than any single instance on fedi.

Does it mean if somebody on your instance subscribing to instance with lot of users (like Gab) then it start pulling all the content of that instace and cause to drastically database growth?
Is this disadvantage of fediverse architecture?
Instance admins can define wath exactly will be pulled and restrict copying all content from other instances?
Finally the only way was totally blocking big instance?

I've never run an instance nor paid too much attention to how things work so I don't understand all of it, but I do remember reading some people complain specifically about the sheer volume of posts coming from Gab all out of a sudden.
