The Graded Direct Method was developed by I.A. Richards and Christine Gibson. This method of teaching *English as a Common Language* grew out of
    their work with the _English Through Pictures_ textbooks. The textbooks make use of *Ogden's Basic English*.

The Graded Direct Method has seen more growth in Japan. Dedicated(serious) teachers design sequences for learning. Teachers also make pictures (line
    drawings) for learners. The learners put statements by the pictures. We are able to see how well the learning is going.
