Some good thought on choosing an instance as a reply to this thread:
https://mastodon.social/@jackyan/110796285137695941 It feels like we're revolving around the same issue all the time: choice of instance.
I've made the mistake of starting on mastodon.social as well. Ever since I moved to an instance that actually fits me, all the mentioned issues went away. The only thing left: How do I choose an instance and why is it so hard?
The sign-up flow should IMHO incorporate an instance chooser based on some kind of user input on the one side and the rules of the instances on the other. This should "match" people to their desired instance.
Instance choice is crucial because virtually everything around moderation, community building, content, etc. revolves around your social circle: The instance you're on!
Reddit worked because you could subscribe to a subreddit (or multiple) and effectively join their social circles. That's key.
What we need is a process asking questions and setting up a user profile, matching it with the profile of instances, presenting those as a preferred choice.
Like three groups to choose from, the mega instances, the tribe according to profile and all of them. And split into free, donation, monthly pay.
That would make it transparent and easy.
