Sorry - I'm dubious. I lived through the Micro$oft era of "Extend and Extinguish." That era is NOT over (take a look at what's happened to the JAVA client for MineCraft after Mojang was acquired by Micro$oft.) These companies play a long game - and they sound all chummy and happy to be part of "the team" at first.
But they simply practice in commerce what Mohammed taught regarding Taqyaa. Whether "real Islam" (however you choose to define it) practices Taqyaa or not is absolutely irrelevant - Mohammed taught it, it is part of the teachings of the Quran - and large multinational companies have learned it's lesson well and have used it to great effect to crush competition. I see @Jack's announcement as just this sort of ploy.

Yes, I agree that this is a long term game and this step can be regarded as "If you cannot defeat something, just lead it".

Besides, they probably want them to work on it in the U.S. where the Intellectual Property will be Twitter's.
I think the Open Source's response should be, "Hey! We've been doing just that for a while - hitch your wagon to what you think is the best of breed and come along for the ride! If you've really had a change of heart, this will be an acceptable solution for you. If you are simply trying to get your hands on the technology of your competitors so you can control it and crush it, you will continue with your plan. We will know what you really think by how you interact with the community. So, by all means, if you want to become part of the open-and-accessible standards, make a Twitter interface to ActivityPub, or Zot, or something else! Pick your favorite, dedicate some developer resources! But don't try to poach our resources so you can control them and claim copyright over their work and crush the open-standards social media efforts already underway. Thank you for your offer, but we are not so foolish as to ignore the cliff's edge in front of the money you are holding out."

I wouldn't worry about it overly much. I didn't read the whole thing, but I did read some articles about it (in German). He hasn't even mentioned AcitivityPub, let alone any of the other protocols, and apparently he's been rambling about Blockchain. The articles I've read sounded more like he wants those hired developers to come with something of their own. What I
have
read of his announcement, he made it sound like decentralization was a totally new thing that Twitter is cooking up. Typical.

In any case, to me it seems like his main motivation is to be able to ditch the responsibility of having to police his network...

Certainly not worried. Why worry? I only care for the poor folk who will be taken in by glitzy marketing and buzzwords.

Nah. I don't even do that anymore. Not after fruitlessly preaching myself hoarse. Not about Twitter, specifically, because I don't know anybody personally who uses it, but about the rest of them.
